Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will enter West Bengal today; Assam police send clash case to CID.
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, will enter West Bengal from Assam on Thursday. Meanwhile, Assam police have forwarded the case against Gandhi and others over the Guwahati disturbances to the CID.
G.P. Singh, the police chief of Assam, said “Reference Basistha PS Case No. 55/24 U/S.120(B)/143/147/188/283/353/332/333/427 IPC R/W Sec. 3 of PDPP Act relating to violation of various laws during road event of Indian National Congress at Guwahati on January 23rd 2024 has been transferred to CID Assam for a thorough and in-depth investigation through a SIT to be constituted by ADGP of CID Assam.”
On Tuesday, the Assam police filed a case against Gandhi and other party leaders for “wanton acts of violence”. Following the skirmishes in Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asked the Assam Police to file a case against Gandhi.
On Tuesday, Congress activists and Assam police clashed in Guwahati when the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra returned from Meghalaya to Assam. The Assam administration reportedly recommended Rahul Gandhi to take the national highway instead of Guwahati’s main arteries to prevent traffic bottlenecks. However, violence erupted after Rahul Gandhi’s bus turned towards the city upon entering Guwahati. Congress workers clashed with police, attempting to remove the barriers.
